Woodward Avenue Tributes
Detroit, MI
The Tributes initiative was conceived as a series of 30-foot tall, illuminated towers that tell the story of Woodward Avenue, now designated as a National Byway. When completed, upwards of two dozen Tributes will stretch along the 26 miles of historic Woodward Avenue from Detroit to Pontiac. The Tributes graphically tell stories of the automotive industry, music, civil rights, art and culture, and labor movements, among others. The first Tribute, installed near the intersection of Woodward Avenue and Nine Mile Road, depicts cultural and historical sites and institutions including Cranbrook Academy, the original Ford Factory, and the Detroit Zoo. Various designers and artists will develop themes and images for future installations.
"The Woodward Avenue Tributes celebrate America's unique treasures, and the spirit of America's Byways. The Federal Highway Administration is delighted to be part of such an exciting program for Woodward Avenue". Gary Jensen, Director of the Federal Highway Administration
